Employee Instructions
1. Marking
Label every item to be moved. If items are separated, all parts or
sections must be tagged.
Labels are pressure-sensitive.
Place labels as illustrated on placement sheet. Apply
approximately one week prior to move; remove immediately after move.
Crimp corner of commercial label when applying to office
furniture. By doing so, labels are easily removed.
2. Desks
Remove contents and pack into cartons.
Disconnect wiring, telephones, or any equipment fastened to desks.
Pack small items such as pens, clips, and rubber bands in
envelopes before packing into cartons.
Pack breakables carefully into cartons.
Items too large for cartons should be bundled, tied or taped
together and labeled.
Typewriter stands, desk extensions, glass tops, desk pads, etc.
must be individually labeled.
3. Credenzas
Remove contents and pack into cartons.
Remove all loose clips that support a credenza shelf. Label shelf
and leave in credenza.
4. File Cabinets
Standard and fireproof file cabinets can be moved with contents
intact. Label and move pressure plates forward to secure contents in
drawer.
Lateral File Cabinets 2drawer cabinets can be moved with the
contents intact. Larger cabinets will be surveyed by your project
manager. Based upon the size of the cabinet and the brand, he will
advise you accordingly regarding the extent of unpacking.
Blueprint or map file cabinets generally can be moved with
contents intact. Each drawer should have some type of slipcover that
must be used to hold the contents in place. If there isn't a
slipcover, you may have to line each drawer with cardboard to
prevent small and delicate contents from shifting.
File cabinets should be locked. Keys should be packed into tote
carton or securely taped to file cabinet. Do not leave keys in locks
keys could be broken off.
If your file cabinet has a push-button lock, make sure you have
the key. If not, use masking tape and wrap around the lock several
times.
5. Bookcases
Remove contents and pack into cartons.
Label bookcases plus each shelf, glass or parts removed.
Remove all loose clips that support the shelves. Label shelves and
place them in bookcases.
6. Metal Supply Cabinets
Remove supplies and pack into cartons.
If possible, lock all cabinets and pack keys into tote carton or
tape securely to cabinet.
If the cabinet cannot be locked, please tape the doors shut.
Supply cabinets are the only piece of furniture that we ask you to
tape shut.
7. Chairs
Label each chair on the metal or wood surface. The labels will not
adhere to upholstery.
Remove all loose casters and pack into your personal carton.
8. Shelving Units
Unless contracted with the mover or installer, separate shelving
units into individual, moveable sections.
Common bond, clip, type or shelving units without side or back
braces may have to be totally disassembled to move.
Potter Warehouse should be shown all shelving units to be moved.
9. Computer Equipment
Your service representative should make sure all levelors are
raised or removed, remove kick plates, tape shut any side or end
panels that easily open, and remove any low-hanging panels. Often,
other service representatives overlook these concerns.
Each machine must be labeled. The keyboards as well as the monitor
for a PC or CRT must be individually labeled.
Pack keyboard, cables and mouse into your tote box. If requested,
we can provide plastic bubblewrap bags for these items.
10. Typewriters and Office Machines
Secure typewriter margins by placing both margin stops in the
center.
Pack covers, pads, etc. into cartons.
Unplug and wrap cords around machines. Detachable cords should be
packed.
Check to see if your typewriter is fastened to your desk. If so,
notify move coordinator, who will arrange for unfastening.
11. Reproduction
Machines or Special Equipment
All inks or fluids must be removed and packed in tightly-capped
containers.
Lightbulbs or loose glass should be removed.
All plastic trays must be removed and packed into cartons.
All equipment should be serviced for moving and adjusted after the
move.
12. Personal Items and Plants
Potter Warehouse is not responsible for money, awards, etc.
Trophies, glass, crystal, or fragile items should be moved by
owner or properly packed by Potter.
All small plants should be moved by their owners.
Larger plants can be moved, but Potter Warehouse is not
responsible for their condition.
13. Packing Containers
Our 1-piece tote carton is specially designed for expeditious
packing. Our cartons self-seal without need for tape. Just pack,
seal and label.
All cartons must be labeled and sealed. Place labels on the
SIDES of all cartons!
14. Non-Packable Items
Items too large for cartons should be bundled, tied or taped
together and labeled.
Delicate or unusually-sized items and artwork should be labeled
and left for Potter Warehouse to pack or handle.
Do not repack cartons just label.
Small form cartons should be labeled. Potter will move
these cartons with gurneys commonly called speed paks in the moving
industry.
